In addition to independent practices, we offer team-based family consultation (FAMCON) that usually entails 4-8 extended (90+ min.) sessions over several months. Alternative, more intensive formats (e.g., several half-day sessions) are sometimes feasible as well .
FAMCON is most indicated when first line interventions do not appear sufficient or clinical circumstances are unusually complicated.
The usual FAMCON format includes preparation via phone contacts, 2-4 extended (90+ min.) assessment sessions with relevant participants, a feedback/opinion session, and several follow-up meetings. The entire consultation process rarely exceeds 8 sessions over several months and includes recommendations to primary providers with follow-up referrals as needed.
In addition to couple and family problems, we apply the family consultation approach to difficult individual problems such as addiction, trauma, psychological distress, and unexplained medical illness. We also work with medical conditions such as cancer, neurological disease, and other forms of chronic illness to help patients and family members achieve more satisfactory adaptation by altering ineffective solution patterns and working together toward change.
